Note - 2 relifs of St George and the dragon in the entablature

A simplified version was used for the monument to Ist Duke of Beaufort (1629 - 1700) formerly in the St George's Chapel at Windsor and moved to the Church at Badminton in 1875.

Grinling Gibbons reused the design for the figures in a drawing prepared for the decoration of the saloon at Blenheimnow at the Bodleian Library.

The figures of Justice and Prudence at Badminton were taken down some time ago but it is hoped they will return.

Some notes and photographs.

It is my intention to put together an in depth study of portrait sculpture at All Souls sometime soon but in the meantime I am adding a couple of photographs As readers of this blog will know it is a receptacle for mostly unfinished notes and images for my parallel blog. -

This blog seems to have taken on a life of its own - but my intention is to try and put the information gathered here into some semblance of order - for instance I have posted on the Equestrian Statue both here in England and in Europe but in a fairly random fashion - it would make sense to put all these notes together in chronological order perhaps arranged by works in the U.K. and then the same with those in Europe.

The notes on the portrait busts of Isaac Newton are currently in this blog because I have not finished putting them together.

Payment of 50 guineas in 1751 ( Biog. Dictionary of Sculptors Yale 2009).

The terracotta for this bust described as Archbishop Chicheley was sold at the Roubiliac Studio sale in St Martins Lane, Lot 86, 2nd day Thursday May 13th, 1762. Disappeared - hopefully it will turn up one day

Bust in the Royal Collection, attrib. van Nost - Black People in 17th and 18th Century European Sculpture - a quick tour.



Some random notes on the Royal Collection bust and portrait sculpture of black people.
Where have the images gone???


"Bust of a Moor" 
Polychrome Marble
in the Royal Collection 
attrib. John van Nost I.

Height 98.5 cms.

It seems that this bust has been in the Royal Collection since about 1700.

This sculpture has been traditionally described as a favorite personal servant of William III.

There appears to have so far been little information available on this incredible bust.

I will remain sceptical for the time being. It is of exceptional quality.

It is my current thinking that it is Venetian.

Pair of Polychrome Marble Busts in the style of Melchior Barthel (1625 - 72) of Dresden.

Sold Gallerie Koller Zurich Switzerland - 2 Dec 2010.

Barthel seems to have made something of a specialty of depicting black people in his sculptures.
